10 Business Books to Skill You Up For a Successful 2020

Reading books from the worlds best leaders in any field is an excellent way to learn from the very best in the game. I often put down a good book and feel as though I've spent quality time one on one with the author in some sort of personalised mentoring session. I also find the presence and attention required to physically read (without distractions of emails and social media) means I digest the information and actually absorb their wisdom and knowledge. I'm a sucker for always having some sort of business or self-help book in my tote bag and am always on the lookout for valuable information and lessons to help me grow as a person and an entrepreneur. This holiday season, try putting down the phone and laptop and instead get lost in a good book, it will do wonders for your brain and your business. Here are 10 books that have changed the way I do life and business.

    1. 5 Second Rule, Mel Robbins. My girlfriend put me onto this book and it was a total game-changer. I actually listen to Mel on audible when I’m at the gym and she is forever giving me a serious wake-up call about all things ACTION. Mel’s book is packed with research, practical tips and proven hacks on how to snap out of procrastination and make real change in your life, be it starting a business, getting fit and healthy or implementing a new habit in your day to day life.
    2. How to Win Friends and Influence People, Dale Carnegie. I read this book in my first year of business and am constantly reminded as to how much it taught me and how I subconsciously use the advice on a daily basis in my business five years on. A simple and easy read that will give you highly effective advice to instantly implement into your business. Great for learning how to pitch to brands for collaborations, converting clients with ease or having a natural ‘networking’ conversation that will lead to bigger opportunities.
    3. Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself - Dr Joe Dispenzia. An all-time favourite of mine if you haven’t already noticed. This book changed my life about four years ago now. It taught me how to use meditation as a powerful tool to design the life of my dreams. Within a week of finishing the book, I started using Dr Joe’s meditations (you can find them on his website) and instantly started seeing results in my life and business. It’s an easy way to get your head around the neuroscience behind meditation and implement a powerful daily practise that will change your life.
    4. The Illusion of Money - Kyle Cease. I recently came across this book and it’s bloody brilliant! As a creative and business owner, it’s easy to doubt yourself and think ‘will anyone ever pay for this?’ Kyle busts that myth hard and shares examples of how some of the worlds most successful people have built their influence and wealth by staying true to their passion and building a business around what they love. A mind-opening read that will inspire you to make your passion a viable business.
    5. This is Marketing - Seth Godin. I was given this book earlier on in the year and love everything Seth has to say. In a world where we are bombarded with advertising and marketing messages that are based around clicks and impressions, Seth offers a refreshing opinion on a new way of marketing to your customer that is based on trust and relationships. If you find yourself doubting your ability to reach your ideal target market in a very saturated marketplace, tune into Seth’s wisdom and try building rapport with your audience by focusing on the solution you have to offer rather than making sales.
    6. The Artist Way, Julia Cameron. I’ve been slowly working my way through this book this year and will aim to make it a daily practice over my holiday break. Full of insights on how to refine your creative process and harness your inner wisdom to help you bring your ideas to life with confidence and ease. The book is packed with daily practises worksheets and hacks on exactly how to implement her advice into your life and business.
    7. What I Know For Sure, Oprah. Who doesn’t want to spend their holidays with Oprah? A beautiful little pocketbook full of wisdom, her personal reflections on life and advice on how to be more fully present in your life. A perfect book to pick up each morning, flick to a page and spend a moment reflecting before you start your day.
    8. A New Earth, Eckart Tolle. This book played a massive role in my personal and spiritual development this year. After listening to Eckart and Oprah’s eight-part podcast series I was inspired to read the entire book. A very insightful view on what it means to have fulfilling relationships, life and personal growth as a human being on each right now.
    9. The Mind-Gut Connection, Emeran Mayer. I read this book years ago after I began studying the mind. I wanted to better understand how to prime my brain for optimal health and once I started digging it didn’t take long to realise that brain health is very closely linked to gut health. I recently attended a weekend workshop on fermented foods (all linked to a healthy gut) and was reminded about how much I learnt from this book. If you’re looking for more clarity, energy and an abundance of creativity in your life and business, taking a look at what you put into your body and affects it has is a really good place to start.
    10. Rising Strong, Brene Brown. My good friend Tess Guinery got me onto this book when I was going through a pretty rough time a few years back. I loved the Netflix talk she put out this year and her appearances on Oprah’s podcast are always leaving me inspired. Brene shares her down to earth advice and very practical research into human behaviour in a way that makes you feel normal and that everything is going to be ok. If you’ve had a tough year, spend some time sipping on a cocktail by the pool with Brene, you’ve got this!
